Lucian Grainge, CBE, is Chairman and Chief Executive of Universal Music Group International. He will become co-CEO of Universal Music Group on 1st July 2010 and work alongside current boss Doug Morris until the end of 2010. On 1st January 2011 he will become sole CEO of Universal Music Group.
For the past ten years, Grainge has held senior positions in the management of Universal Music, culminating in his appointment in 2005 to head the division which manages the group’s wholly-owned businesses in more than 50 countries outside North America.
As the world’s largest music company, Universal Music Group develops and distributes recorded music through its global network. The company is market leader in more than 25 countries, including the US, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Netherlands and Brazil.
Grainge has led Universal Music’s international digital expansion and its market-leading investment in such sectors as entertainment merchandise, live event production, and artist services, including the management of classical musicians and performers.
He has pioneered new distribution models with technology partners through business relationships with Nokia, Spotify, Sky, Virgin Media, Apple, Vodafone, Omnifone/Sony Ericsson, 19 and the BBC, among others.
Grainge has worked with songwriters and artists throughout his career, including U2, Elton John, Abba and Amy Winehouse. He joined Universal Music in 1986, to start PolyGram Music Publishing UK. Within five years, he took the division into the top three publishing companies. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Chairman of Universal Music UK, and promoted to Chairman and Chief Executive in 2001.
An industry veteran who has been in entertainment for more than 30 years, Grainge began as a teenage talent scout in 1978 for April Music/CBS, later working at RCA and MCA before moving to PolyGram. In 2008, he was honoured with the prestigious Music Industry Trusts’ Award, recognised as one of the world’s most influential and successful executives in music.
In Britain’s New Year Honours for 2010, Grainge was awarded a CBE in recognition of his services to the creative industries.
